Mercury: Introduction to an End-member Planet

چکیده
This Chapter introduces the major themes of this book. In many ways, Mercury is an extreme planet, and thus it provides a unique benchmark for testing our theories about the origin and evolution of other (particularly terrestrial) planets. Emphasis is given to synthesizing and critiqueing the book's chapters on the planet's origin, its metal-rich composition, its thermal and geophysical evolution, and its cratering history; these topics are complex and controversial, and this book contains a variety of new perspectives on them. Mercury's geology, atmosphere and magnetosphere are discussed more briefiy. We also place the study of Mercury in its historical context and in the context of the spacecraft exploration program, both past and future. This Introduction is not intended to be a comprehensive summary of the contents of the book; readers wanting an overview of Mercurian science should supplement this chapter by reading the abstracts of the book's chapters.

Introduction In the broad context of planetary science, Mars represents an important transition between the outer volatile-rich, more oxidised regions of the accretion zone of the terrestrial bodies (asteroid belt) and the inner, more refractory and less oxidised regions from which Earth, Venus and Mercury accreted. Its size, the degree of internal activity, the age of its surface features, and...

متن کاملMercury: the planet and its orbit
The planet closest to the Sun, Mercury, is the subject of renewed attention among planetary scientists, as two major space missions will visit it within the next decade. These will be the first to return to Mercury, after the flybys by NASA’s Mariner 10 spacecraft in 1974–5. The difficulties of observing this planet from the Earth make such missions necessary for further progress in understandi...
